The maxim that man`s best friend is a dog may not apply to those who own a Ferrari, but it would seem that dogs are at very least becoming a major fashion accessory amongst the rich and famous. Indeed, A-list celebrities such as Paris Hilton are famous – among other things – for dressing up their canine pets. In fact, Hilton`s pet dog, Tinkerbell, makes regular guest appearances on television and is arguably as talented as the socialite herself! Nevertheless, the practice of dressing dogs in designer attire is not merely the preserve of bored Hollywood stars – it is fast becoming popular among regular people too.
Indeed, during the last five or ten years, looking good has become more important than ever. The social pressures to conform to certain aesthetic standards have resulted in an increased number of cosmetic surgeries during the past decade or so. Furthermore, fashion trends have become more daring as the desire to showcase beauty has developed into something of an art form. However, dogs, adorable as they are, do not generally do much to improve an individual`s visual appearance. On the contrary, the canine creatures can often prove a source of deep embarrassment and social shame in certain cases. Therefore, the practice of dressing up a dog in designer clothing is typically seen as an extension of an individual`s own sense of high fashion and personal grooming. It is also one that is borne out of love and respect for the dog.

Choosing the right designer fashion for a dog, however, is not all that straightforward in the real world. One major concern that dog owners should be minded of is health and safety – if the clothing chosen for a dog is too restrictive or provides too much insulation, the animal may be at risk. Furthermore, the RSPA has threatened legal action against dog owners who "over-dress" their pets, so this is another important factor to consider.
